Color Mixing Basics for Oil and Acrylic Painters with Donna Bird

Have you been painting for a while and still desire more vibrant color in your paintings? This one-day workshop will help you learn to see and mix colors more accurately for your individual artwork. We will focus on palette exercises to help you understand fundamentals of color theory and follow up with a simple still life painting exercise and brushwork exercises that will apply these principles. Supply list will be provided upon registration. Bring your lunch!

Artistic Anatomy with Allison Parker

In this course, artists of any level can learn to make up figures out of their head. We learn to improve our drawing and ‘seeing’ of people through a basic understanding of the skeleton and superficial muscles. Participants will complete studies from the live model and learn to connect ideas of artistic anatomy to what we see on the surface Fall in love with figure drawing and learn why skeletons don’t have to be scary! Minimum 6 students, maximum 12.

What is gouache and what are its advantages? Learn to use this portable, economical, and forgiving media to create dynamic sketches from the live model. We will take a virtual gallery hop of dynamic contemporary artists who use gouache and discuss when, why and how to use it. Going out of your comfort zone helps with speed, accuracy, and style. Explore this unique media in a relaxed, supportive, and professional setting. All levels welcome. Minimum 6, maximum12 participants.

Copying the Masters with Allison Parker

Or, more specifically, “Thinking like the Masters.” How can recreating a master work of art empower today’s artists to expand their understanding of color, light, composition, and subject matter? This class demonstrates how to benefit from self-study through master-copying. Participants will practice an efficient approach to this time=honored practice and leave with inspiration as well as refining of skills. Level – intermediate through advanced, any drawing media. Instructor will demonstrate in pastel/conte pencil.

The Relationship of Value and Color in Painting with Donna Bird

Value in a painting is how light or dark something is as compared to black or white and is considered to be one of the key elements to the success of a painting. This makes relationship of value to color very important. Value is essential to establishing a good composition. This class will help people learn to simplify values for good composition, learn to identify dominant values and conserve your values and color to create more dramatic paintings. Plein Air Basics and Beyond with Renee Pitts

Do you want to paint plein air but find it a bit frustrating to get started? Are you biting at the bit to join the large number of painters who have found such a rewarding way to paint but you’re a little unsure and it all seems too much? Or have you just started or been painting plein air but need a boost and some practice in techniques before the outdoor painting season begins? This class is a way to get you going – paint on site and learn the basics, develop your skills, and tackle your fears. The class is for everyone who is beginner to intermediate. Palettes, easels, tools, paint, techniques – everything you need to get you ready to burst through the gate when the season begins. Site to be determined, but local. A limited number of table easels will be available for those who are just beginning and want to experiment with this method of painting before investing in equipment. Supply list will be available upon registration.

Still Life Set Up by Donna Bird
Saturday, April 22, 2023; 1:00-4:00
Fellow artists are invited to bring flowers, brightly colored objects, anything that
says SPRING! We will combine all these art objects to create a massive spring still life and enjoy painting
together. No instruction. Registration will be limited to 12, so be sure to preregister.

Introduction to Cold Wax with Jacqui Murdaugh
Saturday, April 29, 2023, 9:00-1:00
What is cold wax and why do I want to use it? First of all, you would be surprised to know how many local artists use it as an oil painting medium. It’s made of beeswax and a small amount of solvent and resin. It adds body to the paint and increases the workability of oil paints while adding body and speeding up the drying process. Cold wax can even be used as a varnish. This class will discuss and demonstrate techniques for using cold wax. Participants will experiment and practice on 4 small paintings. A materials list will be provided to registrants. Registration limited to 10.
