Plein Air Basics and Beyond with Renee Pitts

Saturday, April 15, 2023, 9:00-2:00 (new date)

Do you want to paint plein air but find it a bit frustrating to get started?  Are you biting at the bit to join the large number of painters who have found such a rewarding way to paint but you’re a little unsure and it all seems too much?  Or have you just started or been painting plein air but need a boost and some practice in techniques before the outdoor painting season begins?  This class is a way to get you going – paint on site and learn the basics, develop your skills, and tackle your fears.  The class is for everyone who is beginner to intermediate. Palettes, easels, tools, paint, techniques – everything you need to get you ready to burst through the gate when the season begins. Site to be determined, but local.  A limited number of table easels will be available for those who are just beginning and want to experiment with this method of painting before investing in equipment.  Supply list will be available upon registration.

KAG Member, $75; Future KAG Member, $110.

The Simplifying Values for Better Compositions with Donna Bird

Satiurday, April 15, 2023, 9:30-3:30

Trying to identify all the colors in a subject you want to paint can seem overwhelming. For example, the colors in a landscape often look as if they have an infinite range! The key to success is simplifying the light and dark relationships of the colors. In this class, we will do simple exercises to help you see these relationships more clearly and achieve more balanced compositions. In addition, you will also gain a better understanding of how value directly relates to color. Students may bring their own photos to work with if preferred.
For oil and acrylic painters. The supply list will be sent upon registration.
Take your lunch with you to class.

KAG Member, $75; Future KAG Member, $110.

Introduction to Cold Wax with Jacqui Murdaugh

Saturday, April 29, 2023, 9:00-1:00

What is cold wax and why do I want to use it? First of all, you would be surprised to know how many local artists use it as an oil painting medium.  It’s made of beeswax and a small amount of solvent and resin.  It adds body to the paint and increases the workability of oil paints while adding body and speeding up the drying process.  Cold wax can even be used as a varnish.  This class will discuss and demonstrate techniques for using cold wax. Participants will experiment and practice on 4 small paintings.  A materials list will be provided to registrants.  Registration limited to 10.

KAG Member, $45; Future KAG Member, $80.

All Classes held in the Art Room on the 3rd Floor, Room 313, of the Renaissance Center, 1200 E. Center Street, Kingsport, TN.
