Welcome to the “Paint Kingsport” Plein Air Competition and Show!
The competition opens with a one-day workshop on June 27th featuring award winning plein air artist, Karen Philpott. This workshop is limited to 20 participants and will be held at Warriors Path State Park, rain or shine!
Karen Philpott is known widely as an exceptional plein air artist and instructor. She is currently an artist in residence at OnTrack Studios in historic Franklin, Tennessee. Her clients include Aaron Neville, CeCe Winans, and the late Andy Griffith to name a few.
The “Paint Kingsport!” Show will be held in the Renaissance Gallery from July 2 through August 21, 2023.
PRIZES
PLEIN AIR COMPETITION:
BEST IN SHOW: $1000.
SECOND: $750.
THIRD: $450.
QUICK DRAW COMPETITION:
1ST $500.
2ND $200.
3RD $100.
ADVANCED REGISTRATION ONLY; NO ONSITE REGISTRATION.
Paintings must be 2-dimensional, oil, acrylics, watercolor, gouache, ink, mixed media and/or pastels and no larger than 52”x52”; or over 25 pounds.
Paintings must be painted 95% in natural light outdoors (en plein air) during designated "PAINT KINGSPORT! 2023 event scheduled times. Participants will be given a full schedule at registration.
Up to 2 paintings may be submitted to the wet paint show and sale. They must be framed and wired for hanging with an open back to reveal stamp. No saw-tooth hangers.
Canvases and paper must be stamped at the scheduled time prior to painting. All canvases and paper must be free of marks at the time of stamping, although a solid base coat is allowed.
Submitted paintings will be held on display through the entirety of the show schedule during.
15% Commission on all artwork sold during this sale and show will be retained by the Kingsport Art Guild. NFS is allowed.
Payment to the artists for awards will be mailed within 30 days after the wet paint sale and gala.
Payment to the artists for sold paintings will be mailed within 30 days of the close of the show and sale.
Schedule of Events:
Tuesday, June 27, 2023 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Workshop with Karen Philpott at Warriors Path State Park on Duck Island, Kingsport.
Wednesday, June 28, 2023 9 a.m.-12noon Registered artists have their canvas and paper stamped at the Renaissance Center, 1200 E. Center Street, Kingsport (second floor) to be eligible for entry in the Saturday sale and show.
Painting can begin anywhere in Kingsport as soon as canvas and paper are stamped. Paint the Town!
Friday, June 30 2023 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Deliver paintings framed and wired to Renaissance Center Gallery, 2nd Floor. Tape a 3x5 card with the following information on the back of each painting: Artist’s name, title of the painting, medium, price, email and phone number.

9 a.m.-12 noon Paint Kingsport! Quick Draw Competition
12 noon – 2 p.m. Deliver quick draw paintings framed and wired to Renaissance Center Gallery 2nd Floor.
Judging of the plein air competition and quick draw competition will be performed by Karen Philpott.

Karen Philpott - Judge and Workshop Instructor
Karen Philpott resides in her native home of Tennessee where she is an artist in
residency at Ontrack Studios in historic Franklin, TN. Recently awarded in 2022
“Best in Show, Quick Draw, Plein Air In the Smokies Inaugural Event, and
“Award of Excellence” by the American Impressionist Society Small Works 2021
National Show. Memberships include the American Impressionist Society, Oil
Painters of America, and the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society. Past
President of The Chestnut Group, a plein air organization of over 200 members
whose mission is painting to preserve vanishing landscapes of Tennessee.
Additionally she teaches landscape workshops. When asked to define her
style, Karen is comfortable with the terms Modern Impressionist. Influenced by
the Impressionist Artists of the past and American Plein Air Artists before her,
she paints in plein air before moving to her studio to create larger pieces.
Capturing the natural landscape is the subject she is drawn to. Her goal is to
capture in oils, the atmosphere, light and impression nature presents in every season.
